Jona Sharpe, one of the extraordinary designers working at Down to Earth flowers + gifts, has recently won a scholarship from the Teleflora Design Education Center!! Every year essays are submitted to Teleflora from designers, in their local area, for a chance to win a scholarship to the state of the art education center in Oklahoma City. This year Jona won the scholarship for the Puget Sound region. Upon winning the contest she has chosen to take a a class from the inspiring and world renowned designer Hitomi Gilliam on an all expense paid trip Oklahoma City.

Jona started her career as a flower delivery driver in Roseville, CA in 1973. She attended design school in Portland, Or in 1978 and started as a designer at Kel's Flower Shop in Vancouver, WA. Throughout her career she has worked at shop's all over Washington state and now finds her designing home at Down to Earth Flowers. She has worked with many talented designers and despite her busy schedule, always finds time to stay abreast of the new trends and designs. If you are interested in seeing some of her amazing designs stop by the Snoqualmie Casino and pop in the front door, as she designs the arrangement just inside the grand entrance once a week, as well as the arrangements in the Falls Buffet, TerraVista and Kindai Sushi and Noodle Bar.

It has always been a dream of Jona's to attend a workshop at the Teleflora Education Center so join us in Congratulating Jona on her Dream Come True!!

Check out these amazing photos from a wedding we did last weekend. Amy and Torry tied the knot in a Halloween-themed wedding in Tacoma. Her custom wedding dress designed by Luly Yang was stunning. The live band - Rewind (80s and 90s cover band) was so much fun and kept the crowd on their feet all night!

Summer blink

Wow! Where did summer go? Wedding flowers, casino flowers and everything in between! No moss grew under our feet except under the beautiful canopy of the English walnut tree in our courtyard.
Come by and see the squirrels racing around collecting the walnuts from this 100 year old tree.

Each bride was beautiful and each wedding so unique! We love creating original designs and the flowers and colors were sensational. Juliana and our great team of designers take impeccable care with each wedding making sure it is exactly what the bride and groom envisioned.

Jona and staff continue to amaze with new and exciting arrangements at the Snoqualmie Casino each week.

We are happy to announce that we will be moving to a beautiful new location in the middle of January. No need to fear, Snoqualmie is still our home. We will be moving back downtown into the Sherman Building.

Never a Dull Moment at the Flower Shop

While kids young and old enjoyed their beloved snow days this week, your commited team at Down to Earth braved the elements and created lovely floral creations to deck your Turkey tables. None of it could have happened without the commitment of our die-hard delivery driver. Neither rain, nor, snow, nor ice has kept her away from reaching her destinations.

Chamber Luau

This weekend is the Chamber of Commerce's annual gala. Its theme is a Hawaiian luau and Down to Earth was happy to sponsor a table. Needless to say, we had a fabulous time creating this tropical centerpiece for the party. There are so many exotic tropical flowers out there, it was hard to decide which to use.

In addition to the table piece, we used large tropical leaves as table runners. For the finishing touch, we placed miniature tropical ferns, complete with umbrella accents, at each table setting --a fun and inexpensive idea to use when you are hosting a party.

Introducing our Traveling Bouquet

Last week we launched our traveling bouquet program. Here’s how it works. Each week a bouquet is delivered to an area business along with a postcard. The postcard says to enjoy the flowers for an hour and then pass them on to someone who can use some cheer.

A Harvard Medical School behavioral study found that people feel more compassionate toward others, have less worry and anxiety and feel less depressed when fresh cut flowers are in the home. The Traveling Bouquet is our little way of spreading a little cheer in the Valley. Salish Wedding

We were busy bees last weekend with three weddings! This was one we did down the street, at the Salish Lodge. The towering centerpieces had a base that illuminated the white orchid within the glass of the cylinder. Crystals dripped from the willow branches; imagine how they sparkled at night! The beautiful centerpieces were completed with white calla lilies, hydrangea, roses and dahlias.

No Green Thumb, No Problem

Tillandsias make the perfect houseplant for those of us with a not-so-green thumb. More commonly known as air plants, these unique beauties are in the bromeliad family. They are commonly found in southern regions of North America as well as growing on trees in areas of Central and South America. Such plants are known as epiphytes and do not require soil for nourishment.

As houseplants, tillandsias can often be seen attached to pieces of driftwood or even interesting stones. Primary care is simply bright filtered sunlight and a thorough weekly misting. Always refer to care instructions for more details on your specific plant.

There are so many varieties of air plants. These are a few we recently installed in the casino coffee shop.

Sarah writes..."Did you know? Ranunculas are, like, so hot right now. Flowers are subject to trends like any industry. And ranunculus have enjoyed the spotlight for some years now, eclipsing the roses, carnations and gladiolias of the 80’s, the sunflowers of the 90’s (need I remind you of Blossom?) and the orchids and exotic (and often unfortunately phallic) flowers that dominated the earlier part of this decade. The past five years have seen a return to what I call “storybook” flowers. Softer, looser, more naturally inspired arrangements. This style stands in stark contrast to the tight, packed “contemporary” look that has been largely relegated to the world of trade shows and large corporate events where flower budgets (until recently) were exorbitant. Now you hear floral designers talk about mimicking nature, following the seasons…letting individual blooms “lead,” and giving stems their “space.”
